Transcript episode 32
Nancy: Hi, and welcome to the WHYcast episode 32.
Nancy: I'm Nancy.
Ad: I'm Ad.
Nancy: And we are the hosts of the only podcast about a hacker camp in the universe. This volunteer run event will take place this year in the Netherlands, approximately 42 kilometers north of Amsterdam from August 8 to 12, 2025. So, Ad, what are we going to talk about today?
Ad: Well, we have the news.
Ad: No, we have a little bit more than that. We have a where to hack. We have a couple of vacancies. But I think we don't have an interview.
Nancy: This is probably going to be the shortest WHYcast episode ever.
Ad: Well, up till now, at least. Yeah, I mean, we can try to make it maybe shorter. No, but it's great weather outside. We don't have an interview this time. So, after this, go outside, enjoy the weather. And if you have something to tell, if you have something to share, you might be the next interview.
Nancy: Please reach out to us, because that helps. I'm reaching out to loads of people for interviews. And planning them takes time, which is fine. But the last couple of weeks, it has been a bit busy for my site. And also, I did two interviews, which I tripped up, because I forgot to turn on the noise cancellation. So, that didn't happen. So, we need new interviews. And you can do it yourself as well, or let yourself be interviewed by someone else and send it in. Because it takes time, which is fine, because we love doing it. But sometimes when we have a little bit less time available, we will have a shorter episode.
Ad: Yeah, I'm still in favor of having a day of 29 hours or something. So, you just have a little bit extra time.
Nancy: You can probably fill it up anyway, so it doesn't matter.
Ad: Time is not a problem.
Nancy: It's the amount of shit I want to put in it.
Ad: Time in a day, yeah.
Nancy: But let's talk about the news, because today is less than 100 days. Do I?
Nancy: Oh, my goodness. Yeah, we made a post about it last Tuesday. And somehow, it's like sort of a magic number, which you go through. Like, less than 100 days, it feels so close by now. And so much work still has to be done.
Ad: But okay. Yeah, but also, in three months from now, there will be people on the field already starting to build up. No. And it feels like only three weeks ago, it was New Year's.
Nancy: Uh-huh.
Ad: I mean, yeah. Time flies. Do be flying, yes.
Nancy: And not only time is flying. What's also flying is the tickets out of the ticket store. They are still selling pretty well. So probably when this episode comes out, we will have around 500 tickets left. That's it. So if you haven't bought your tickets yet, go to tickets.why2025.org and get your ticket now. And also, also, please, please, please, please order your merch. In the same ticket shop.
Ad: It's either this week or next week. They will tally up. Maybe they already have tallied up the orders and sent out a request to the manufacturer. So after that, merch is not guaranteed. They will order some extra. But you run the risk of running out.
Nancy: Yep.
Ad: Yep.
Nancy: Also, coming Wednesday, will be another online Orga Meet with everybody. There will be a physical Orga Meet in June. Let me check the dates because I don't know it by heart now. It's the 22nd. Oh, the 21st. Sorry. It's the 21st of June. It will be in The Hague. Mind you, the next day, the NATO top will start. So please, if you make travel plans, if you're coming from a bit further away than just based in the Netherlands, please take into account that the whole city will be closed off the next day on Sunday. So the physical Orga Meet will be the 21st of June in The Hague. And please make sure you get out of the city that night because otherwise you're stuck there, which is lovely. I've lived in The Hague for a couple of years. It's a lovely city. A lot, a lot is going on there. But it's not. It's not the best place to be if it's regarding traveling.
Ad: It'll probably be a ginormous mess.
Nancy: Yeah.
Ad: Fun, but messy. But messy. Yes.
Ad: We also have some information on a village, a special village coming up online.
Nancy: What have you heard?
Ad: Not much.
Nancy: Not much.
Ad: No. So I am just hearing this for the first time as well.
Nancy: You're hearing this for the first time. For the first time.
Nancy: That's cool. Because Mitch Altman was at our field day. Mitch is a notorious hacker from originally the USA. Of course, he always does the hardware hacking village. He's at CCC camps. He's all over the place. A lovely, lovely person. And you did an interview with him in one of the earlier episodes at Hackfest.
Ad: Episode three.
Ad: Yeah, in episode three.
Nancy: And he got to talk with Jos, who has also been in the WHYcast somewhere in, I think, beginning of November. Jos is in team content. Also has been in the Dutch hacker scene for years and years and years.
Ad: Yeah. Episode 10.
Nancy: Thank you so much.
Ad: Episode 10.
Nancy: And they were talking to each other like, we need to do something for people from the US or people.
Nancy: Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Who are based in Europe and cannot go back to the US for all kinds of interesting, not so interesting reasons. So they came up with an idea of having a village that is called USA Refugee Camp at WHY.
Ad: Yeah.
Nancy: Of course, it's at first you think, oh, ha ha ha, that's funny. But also, we know that a lot of people are from Europe. A lot of people in our community are really having a hard time with everything that is going on in the US right now. People who are not welcome there anymore. People who are thrown out of the country. All kinds of things. Scientists, journalists, people who are really having a hard time. So we will have either Jos or Mitch or both in the WHYcast anytime soon.
Nancy: Yeah. Yeah. We'll have to plan that. But I think it's interesting and also a little bit sad that it's needed. But there will be a USA Refugee Camp at WHY.
Ad: Yeah. And there might be people who will skip Black Hat at Mandalay Bay and instead come over to WHY and DEF CON.
Ad: Yeah. Yeah.
Nancy: There will be more than one village who will. We will have you with open arms. But we have a special refugee camp for USA citizens.
Ad: Yes.
Nancy: Okay.
Ad: Well, if there is no more news, then we'll skip the interview and go to the where to hack.
Nancy: Each week, we will share where you can find white-minded people. Where to hack.
Ad: Friday the 16th, there is PyGrunn. So again, something in Groningen. They keep popping up. On my radar somehow. At Forum in Groningen, there will be PyGrunn, which is a Python and Friends developer conference with a local footprint and a global mindset. I mean, it sounds brilliant. Tickets are still available, at least when I was checking the website out, pygrunn.org. And I believe this is the 13th time they organized this. So it's...
Nancy: Wow.
Ad: Impressive.
Ad: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Ad: And if you want more sunshine, you could go to Portugal, May 12th through to 16th, for the RIPE meeting, RIPE 90. So that's not 13. That's 90. So they've been at it for a while. Yeah. That's a multi-day event with lots of stuff around internet providers and wide area networks and how... The internet keeps afloat, basically.
Nancy: Cool.
Ad: Yeah.
Nancy: Enough cool stuff going on. Otherwise, you can always go to your local hackerspace and have some fun there.
Ad: Absolutely. Or one that is just one city over.
Nancy: That's also cool. Yeah. Make it like... Still a road trip. Another. Another hackerspace. That would be cool. Yeah. Still a road trip.
Nancy: And, of course, we have loads and loads and loads of stuff. We have some lovely volunteers. And we could always use some more because we still have some open vacancies.
Ad: There is obviously the parking thing. I will mention it. I mean, we still need someone for parking. We still need someone for parking. It's still there. Merge coordinator is also a position that is still open. Hold on. Hold on a second. Hold on. Hold on.
Nancy: I just... I just reminded. Because we might have someone for the parking. Take and see.
Ad: Might.
Nancy: At least for the preparation part of things.
Ad: Okay.
Nancy: Okay.
Ad: Okay.
Nancy: So we have someone for the preparation part of things. Which is Dave. Which is cool. Cool. But also, we need someone at the event itself as well. Because Dave will be busy with the Dutch hackerspaces village.
Ad: Yeah.
Nancy: So...
Nancy: Yeah.
Nancy: Yeah.
Nancy: So there's extra time to find someone extra as parking coordinator. But you will have more help than just Conmye. So we still need someone. But it's not that urgent anymore. But we still need someone.
Ad: Simon...
Nancy: Go for the accessibility part now.
Ad: Simon from Team Accessibility could also use some extra hands.
Ad: Yep. And there are a bunch more vacancies you can find on the Wiki. Wiki.
Ad: And it's also in the little bar on the left if you go to the wiki.
Ad: Right. I'm pretty sure you can find it.
Nancy: You will find it. If you go to the wiki, all the information is there. And if you are in doubt, reach out to anyone from the organization to help you get on the right spot.
Ad: Or just join in on one of the biweekly online Orga Meets. That's also a great way to get in touch. Because pretty much all the teams are in those meetings.
Ad: Because one of the things that happens in those meetings...
Nancy: And you will hear cool latest news always. So it's always fun to hear.
Ad: They will all give a little update on what they're working on. And that is a great way to get a feel for what the team is doing. And you can always say, okay. I might want to... I might want to help you and then take it elsewhere later and then have a meeting and join a team.
Nancy: Yeah. So we checked our YouTube channel. We checked Kastropod. We checked Mastodon. We checked our mailbox. We checked everything. And we couldn't find a message from a listener. We did find all kinds of other cool stuff. So if you follow us on Mastodon, I saw some very cool things. Going on there from visitors and organ members of WHY. So make sure you follow us there because it's great fun. But we haven't actually found something that we could use for the show for now. So no messages from listeners.
Ad: No.
Ad: None.
Ad: I just checked again. There's none.
Nancy: None. There's none.
Ad: I don't really... I doubt that. So if you have a message for us. If you have a message for us. If you have a question for the entire WHY. If you want to do an interview. If you have a cool story to share. Let us know in the comment section down below. Tag us on the socials. Don't forget to like and subscribe. And you can always send us an email at WHYcast at WHY2025.org.
Ad: And with that, one of the shortest episodes ever. Thank you so much for listening. And we hope to see you next Friday.
Nancy: WHYday. Bye. Bye.
