The Design
Attention all Hackers! The WHY2025 huisstijl has arrived! We have some basic elements for you to work with while we work on creating a generator for everyone to use.
The design story
The vibe
The name of this version of the event sounds out an ominous existential question: why? Which is followed by the no less existential phrase: what hackers yearn for. We certainly yearn for events like these. But what do we yearn for in general? What does it even mean to ‘yearn for’ something? For us, pondering these questions conjured up images of dreaming of things, dreaming of technology, of stretching our wings, of expanding knowledge and exploring the unknown. We cycled through many, many ideas. From dreamy birds to newly generated constellations. Nothing quite felt right, until we got to space- and planetary exploration as a theme. Which worked beautifully with a saturated vaporwave-inspired colourstory.
The WHY2025 design has 80’s elements and lots of neon lights, and a subtle nod to the original space exploration idea we started with. The logo mimics the iconic setting sun designs from the ‘80s, using two half circles, with flipped lettering in the bottom half, and a happy yellow asteroid belt pulling the two halves together.
It glows like bright neon-tubing, as if it is a welcome sign to the diner that WHY2025 will be. A buffet of awesome people, talks, workshops, art and fun.
And the best part is: when the generator is done, you will be able to make your own welcome sign!
What should I do to stay on theme?
It all depends on what you yearn for. But here are some guidelines we highly encourage you to use:
- use the colour story as it is;
- give things an 80’s vibe;
- go all out with neon lighting;
- use the font;
- search ‘vaporwave’ for awesome inspiration;
- add space and planetary references;
- use the generator when we release it;
- have fun!

The chosen font for WHY2025 is the neon inspired Beon font, by Bastien Sozeau. More information on the font can be found here: https://github.com/noirblancrouge/Beon The font itself can be downloaded from the same Github repository.

This font has been chosen because:
- it fits the 80’s (ethisch) vibe we are going for
- it’s very complete, and can spell out any and every hacker pseudonym
- it’s stencilable (which makes the Deco team happy)
- it has an OFL-1.1 license
- it’s awesome!
The double-lined look in the logo is the result of outline effects, and is not standard in the font itself.

Some notes
Because nothing is ever perfect, we might also tweak some details, but the most recent version will always be available via the wiki. Soon we will also be uploading and sharing all the raw files for you to tinker with.
