Name Silent Lounge
Contact Auke
Status idea
Budget 1500

The current concept is to create an interstellar space, with floating persian carpets. Here is the proposed floor plan. Dark red means the carpets are directly on the floor. Pink means one layer of pallets and foam. Light pink means two layers of pallets and then foam.

The floor is covered in dark blue carpet (acquired), somehow dotted with light/stars. The ceiling and sides are covered in dark fabric, with light/stars as well. Floating carpets (with pallets below them) have the pallets hidden behind black fabric. Each carpet will have at least on spotlight above it (pointing down). The entrance is curved or hidden with a black curtain as well, so that the interior slowly shows itself when you walk in.

I would like to add some clear plastic balloons/bubble with lights inside, dispersed in the space. We may need to add a few tables with seating as well.

Carpets I can provide, I've got a few of those in storage...

Hackalot has a very nice miniature world hanging in their space, it would look awesome in this space with one or more spotlights on it... I'll try to get it for the silent lounge, no promises :)

Problems:

  • how do we create a starry effect in the carpet, without spending too much money, and too much effort. Current thinking: use glow in the dark hotglue and uv lights. Or use strings of leds, and cut holes in the carpet, use hotglue to protect the leds (try this out!). The ceiling and sides can have holes poked into them with a solder, and add floodlights behind/above them.

To acquire/rent:

  • pallets, about 36 of them. Can be bought for about 5,- each, hopefully renting is cheaper - 200,-
  • black fabric, fire retardant, about 100m x 3m, should cost about 500,-
  • black rope, to attach the ceiling fabric and spotlights, about 200m - estimate 100,-
  • spotlights, ideally battery/accu powered, about 10, Action has some nice ones, estimate 50,-
  • ledlights for in the floor, about 1000, with about 100 preattached on a wire. budget about 300,-
  • carpet, acquired, cost about 250,-/2 (heaven pays for half).
  • cement tubs (2 x 2, large + small) and led-lit fountain - 100,-
  • aroma dispenser and fragrance, acuired - 50,-
  • powercord/distribution - lend from tkkrlab/auke

total expected costs: 1225,-

Dependencies

  • Other teams needed? transport/delivery of pallets
  • Permits required? None
  • Power in watts? minimal
  • Network? Private network required? Nope.

Status

  • TODO: Buildlog...

Howto: Prepare

  • TODO: Is there a part in the preparation process that can be performed in parallel by a group of volunteers?
  • TODO: Do volunteers require a specific set of skills?
  • TODO: How many volunteers over how many hours are required?
  • TODO: Is the preparation bound to a specific location?
  • TODO: How much space is required to store the project before it is moved to the event site?

TODO: Describe the manufacturing process in the highest level of detail.

Howto: Buildup

  • Where is the stuff stored?
 - carpets are at Hackalot (Eindhoven), about 6 m3, rolls up to 3m wide
  • Should Team Logistics be involved in moving the project to the event site?
 - yes
  • How many volunteers are required?
 - beforehand, creating the starry floor, about 3
 - buildup, hanging ceiling/wall covers and laying floor, about 2
  • How much time is required?
 - starry floor: unknown, will come back with an estimate after further experiments
 - ceiling/walls/spotlights: about a full day
  • TODO: Provide instructions on how to set up the installation on the event site.

Howto: Teardown

  • Throw/give away?
 - carpets have a destination, when not perforated with leds. Depending on how cool it looks
   maybe this can be reused?
  • How many volunteers are required?
 - 2 for walls/ceiling
 - 2 for the floor
  • How much time is required?
 - about 4 hours for both floor and walls/ceiling.
  • How much waste in cubic meters is produced?
 - hopefully none... I'll get back on that.
