Rules of Conduct
* Be fair! Do not do to others what you do not wish done to yourself!🌈
* Protect your computer! We cannot be held responsible for any damage your computer may face due to attachment to our network. Be reminded that both internet access and the local network are unfirewalled and unfiltered. Even well-maintained systems can be attacked and get hacked, even more so at a hacker event.
* Do not run your own DHCP server! Doing so is harmful.
* Do not send IPv6 Router Advertisements.
* Do not ARP spoof or otherwise impede the operation of the network!
* While we are generally quite able to find and disconnect you in case of network misuse if necessary, we still prefer to not have to do so and that everybody respects the other visitors.
* Think twice before you do something that affects others! If you hack someone, you might be prosecuted. Be aware that we cannot prevent law enforcement from acting within or related to our network.👮🚨🚔
* Do not connect S/FTP or F/FTP (so called shielded cables) to a Datenklo; this is to prevent ground-loops.
* See also Rules for wireless equipment.

Wired
There will be wired 100BASE-TX/1000BASE-T/10GBASE-T ethernet on the camping grounds and in the caravan area by means of so-called "Data Toilets" or "Datenklos". Look for construction toilets with tin foil wrapped around them.

You can lay your own cables, but please do so in a tidy manner. You must not cross any roads, paths or borders between camping grounds. Always lay your cable from the Datenklo towards your tent to keep any slack close to your tent. Leave 5m of slack cable at the Datenklo. You can simply leave the end of your cable at the Datenklo, it will be connected by helpers at regular intervals (during reasonable work hours). If you want your cable back, make a proper spool of it and leave that at the Datenklo or mark it accordingly. It will be disconnected for you to pick up.

The maximum line-of-sight distance to the next Datenklo will be approximately 50 meters. Cables will not be provided. A length of 50 meters is recommended. If that is insufficient, you will find someone within this range who has a switch and can plug you in. But bringing 60 or 75 meters won't hurt if you want to be sure. Do not bring SFTP or other shielded cables, this can cause harm you your and our equipment, we will not connect them (this is to prevent ground loops).

Optionally, bring & connect a small ethernet switch when connecting multiple devices. Please disable Spanning-Tree Protocol if you would connect a managed switch.

Wired connections are unfiltered. If you have (older) devices that cannot be trusted with unrestricted incoming connections, bring a router or firewall (and disable the wifi!).

Wireless
You can't live without wireless access, so we've built an awesome wireless network again.

WHY2025 SSIDs
<dl>
<dt>Network Name (SSID)</dt>
<dd>WHY2025</dd>
<dt>Username</dt>
<dd>why</dd>
<dt>Password</dt>
<dd>why</dd>
</dl>

The following SSIDs are provided:

* WHY2025 (WPA3 802.1X (see below), 2.4GHz+5GHz+6GHz) ✅ noc recommended ✅
* WHYFI (WPA3 802.1X (not announced), 2.4GHz+5GHz+6GHz) ✅ aprl recommended ✅
* WHY2025-open (open/OWE, 2.4GHz+5GHz+6GHz)
* spacenet (WPA3 802.1X, 2.4GHz+5GHz+6GHz) - you can connect with a valid account if your hackerspace offers it.
* eduroam (WPA3 802.1X, 2.4GHz+5GHz+6GHz) - you can connect with a valid account if your university/college/school is offering eduroam.

WPA2 802.1X, encryption
Due to popular demand (and with security in mind) we provide WPA2 802.1X. This will encrypt your traffic, preventing attackers from sniffing your data. Keep in mind that this won't protect you from other network attacks and you should still be aware that you are at a hacker conference! Your link layer should be secure if you do certificate checking (see below).

You might think: "WTF!? Do I need to register a user and password blah, blah". Fortunately not. You can use any username/password combination using EAP-TTLS with PAP to login (example: "user: fbhfbhiaf pass: bgufwbnkqo" is valid), because we don't care who logs in and who you are. We just want to encrypt your data.

Users which use MSCHAPv2 (like Windows users with default 802.1X supplicant) should use a fixed username and password. You can use "why/why" or "guest/guest" as "username/password".

Client Settings
Also see client settings for a list of OS-specific client settings.

<pre>SSID: WHY2025

EAP-TTLS:

Phase 1: EAP-TTLS
Phase 2: PAP

PEAP:

Phase 1: PEAP
Phase 2: MSCHAPv2 or EAP-MSCHAPv2 or PAP

CN = radius.eventinfra.org
CA = ISRG Root X1

SHA256 Fingerprint = 95:28:B8:D2:4E:F3:66:D6:4F:B9:9F:D1:A4:EC:EE:1D:FE:4A:BA:93:C9:46:7E:D0:43:C9:E9:C2:50:38:8F:4B
</pre>

Make sure you check the certificate in order to know you are connecting to the correct network (you should check on both the CN and the CA). Check here for the complete certificate.

Services VLANs
We're using WPA2 802.1X to push your client in the correct VLAN. The reason we are doing this is to keep the number of SSID's per wireless band to a minimum; this way we are saving airtime by not wasting it too much with 802.11 beacons/mgmt-frames. Use the following user/password combinations:

Username
Password
Result
why
why
allowany
outboundonly
outboundonly
Filtered connection with public IP address. Inbound connections from the Internet or camp-site are not possible.

Please note the username AND password are case-sensitive.

Rules
To keep the wireless working for you, keep a few things in mind:
* We're aware you can break the WiFi infrastructure. We're hoping that you won't and don't want to be chased by 3500 hackers through the Camp.
* If you want to download terabytes of data, you might be better off connecting to the wired network
* Don't set up your own accesspoint. However, if you have no other choice (for running experiments and such), please be nice and consider these rules:
** Please do not operate non-WiFi/analog equipment in these frequencies.
** 2.4GHz: use channels 1, 5, 9 or 13 @ 20MHz. Disable 802.11b.
** 5GHz: use channels 36 or 140 @ 20MHz.
** Minimum data-rate = 12Mbit/s, also for beacon-rate. Beacon interval 100ms or higher.
** Limit the number of broadcasted BSSID's per radio to 1 or 2. No SSID spamming etc is allowed.
** Do not prefix your broadcasted ESSID(s) with "WHY". Do not use "WHY2025" as your ESSID. Do not use other well-known ESSIDs.
** Do not use high-gain antennas.
** Limit your transmit-power for example to 6dBm or 4mW.

Co-location
There will unfortunately be no co-location service at Camp. You are welcome to host a server in your tent/village and you can get a 10-gigabit copper uplink from one of the nearby datenklos. If you have any special requests regarding bandwidth please contact the NOC at noc *DOT* WHY2025.org. Please send your requests in English.

IXP
There will be a IXP at WHY2025. For more info see IXP.

<big>Disclaimer: This page needs love to be better, it was added in February 2025, not all information is known at this time.</big>

Below is a short list of the facilities there will be at WHY2025.
: Highlights of this will be written in the Booklet.
: Team:Info will reach out to every team and kindly ask to add their points in here.

Basic infra before and after the event
The terrain has permanent basic facilities: showers, toilets and power.

Using a scale-up approach more facilities will become available as more angels and orga are on the terrain.

Permanent facilities include:

* Toilets, sinks and a shower at 1 location
* Basic power at 10+ locations - Only for devices which do not consuming too much power. Do switch when the power generators are on. Schuko is recommended, there are no 16A blue CEE sockets.
* A lot of birds, trees, nature.

The map of the terrain can be seen at https://map.why2025.org

Parking
If you arrive by car or motorcycle, you cannot drive it onto the terrain. There is a parking lot opposite of the terrain. Follow the signs.
* You need a ticket for parking.
* The parking lot is closed for newly arriving cars from 00:00 to 6:00.
* Please plan your trip so you arrive well before 00:00 or after 06:00.
* There is no infrastructure for charging electric vehicles on the terrain or in the parking lot.
* You are not allowed to camp on or near the parking lot.

Angel / volunteer catering and support
The WHY2025 event can't happen without volunteers, so Team:Volunteers is there to make sure all visitors who want to volunteer can do so and get all the TLC they need.

If you would like to volunteer register an account at https://angel.why2025.org/ and once you arrive at the campsite walk over to the volunteer desk at the center of the camp to let us know you're here.
There you will receive further instructions about how you can help.
No strings attached, you decide how many shifts you want to do.
If you do volunteer, however, expect a free and healthy meal, a lot of people who are happy to see you, and a warm and fuzzy feeling on the inside.

We provide:
* The angelsystem to register as angel and self assignment to shifts.
* A place called Heaven with a big tent, and maybe a campfire in the evening where all volunteers and crews can chill out.
* Food and drinks for volunteers and crew, is also there during buildup and teardown.
* Distribution of food tokens for volunteers.
* Volunteer coordinators to answer questions from volunteers and to make sure all teams get the help they need.

* When using a boat the skipper is always responsible (please be careful) or ask the harbour authority for assistance or advice.
* Please drink enough water, remember Mate != Water.

Waste
As efficient as hackers get, there are always some bits left over. Team:Waste has your back.
We organize the trash-bins, empty them on a regular basis and get everything away from the field.

We provide:
* about 100 bins scattered throughout WHY2025 to get rid of your 'regular household' trash.
* Arranging the emptying of said bins.
* About 20 buckets with sand for dunking your cigarettes.
* An awesome time as a volunteer with us.

We do not provide:
* Large or hazardous waste removal.

We ask of you:
* Drop trash in bins. Not around the field.
* Please do not dispose of sharp objects in the trash, think of our safety. Package it well if you absolutely need to.
* Report by using the QR code on the front of the bin the status of a bin. It's fun, helps us and creates cool stats.
* Take home what you bring to the field. Do not leave your tent, sofa's, projects etc.

Power
Team:NUTS will deploy distribution boxes with 230V SCHUKO sockets over most of the field. You may use them to power your stuff.
Bring an extension cord and a power strip to share power with your neighbors.

Power is supplied from a 1 megawatt transformer.
We will also use a battery on the far end of the field to be able to supply power after long cable runs.<br>
Please help the environment by conserving power where possible and do not run HVACs or similar power guzzling devices.<br>

WE SIMPLY DON'T HAVE THE REQUIRED INFRASTRUCTURE FOR CHARGING ELECTRIC VEHICLES OR SHIPS.<br>
If you need charging, you need to find a charging station outside of the camp terrain.
For your and other participants safety:

* Only use outdoor extension cords (IP44 "splash proof")
* Use cables/SCHUKO plugs with protective earth only.
* Wires should be at least 1.5 mm² or thicker. -> 2.5mm² are highly recommended. These cables are usually marked with "3G1.5" and "3G2.5".
* Industrial cables (marked H05RN-F or H07RN-F (neoprene), or H05BQ-F or H07BQ-F (polyurethane)) are the best cables for outdoor use.
* Indoor plugs/sockets and power strips need to be kept dry and protected from water. Keep them inside your tent and above ground level (hang them).
* Don't leave powered equipment unattended, if you are the last to leave your tent/village, disconnect everything, except for the cable to your neighbors.
* Make sure power supplies are of decent quality and have enough room and ventilation to dissipate heat.
* Campfires are forbidden at WHY2025, especially in your tent.

If you have equipment that cannot handle power outages well, bring a small UPS. Power outages can occur at random and even multiple times in a row if we have trouble finding the device(s) that causes them.

There are some RED 400V/32A 5pol. sockets too. If you want to use those, for example to power villages, bigger projects or generally power-hungry equipment like pizza ovens, saunas or tesla generators, consult Team:NUTS at nuts@lists.why2025.org in advance.
We will do our best to accommodate the request, but there are some limitations.

We can't facilitate the BLUE 16A CEE plugs. Do not expect any 400V/16A 3-Phase (RED) CEEs either.

Computers in a camping environment

One issue concerning hardware in tent environments is morning dew.

Dew affects not only desktop hardware, but any kind of electric contact or conductor exposed to humid air. Since desktop hardware is generally not very tightly enclosed, it is relatively sensitive to dew. Especially when it is not running for a while and therefore cold, it attracts dew like any other unheated object. To prevent your hardware from damage, you might want to leave it on, or bring some plastic bags to put your power plugs, desktop switches, or even computers inside and seal them up carefully.

A few tips for placing your equipment:
* Don't place it in a poorly ventilated tent during a sunny day (too much heat; danger of fire).
* Don't place your PC on the ground, even a beer crate keeps ground water out.
* Stand your PC upright, so the warm air raises through the box to the top and out of the back of the power supply
* Your most problematic equipment will be power connectors. Make sure you ALWAYS place them above ground and out of the rain.
If any electrical equipment gets wet, DO NOT TOUCH IT AND KEEP A SAFE DISTANCE UNTIL POWER IS TURNED OFF AT THE CENTRAL FEED YOU GET YOUR POWER FROM!<br/>
If you are using your equipment when it gets wet, it may survive if you unplug it immediately. Most of the time electronics can get wet without a problem if there is no current flowing through it. It will probably work fine if you let it dry out entirely before powering it up again. (The same isn't necessarily true for mechanics, such as motors in a DVD-ROM.) You should also take out the battery. (On desktop PCs, also take out the CMOS battery if possible.)

Your biggest problem will be the really sunny days when it doesn't rain. 40+ Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) means that you have to make sure that your equipment gets good ventilation and check if your air filters and fans get clogged with dust. Bring spares. Besides, when it's that hot, you might want to shut down your computer and find a friendly neighboring village with a pool.

As long as you adhere to these basic rules, you will be just fine.

Some Tips for Travellers, especially from the US

Voltage in the Netherlands is 230V 50 Hz, please check, that your device are suitable for that voltage.
Most modern Laptop and phone chargers have a wide range power input, typically from 100-240 Volts.
If you want to use a 120 volt only device, you need a voltage converter. If you plug your US device in directly without a voltage converter, it will be destroyed within seconds.

Do not bring 120 volt surge protectors power strips (see picture above), they will trip a series of RCD switches and a lot of people will have a power outage. If we find them, we will cut off the plugs.

Use grounded travel adaptors only. Use them only in dry areas. Avoid the fancy multi-country adapters, they are not grounded and bad in quality.
If you have only one device, it may be better to buy an European power cord.

Recommended grounded travel adaptors for US, UK, Switzerland and Italy:

WHY2025 supports wireless card payments for mostly anything.
You can also convert physical money into a temporary payment card (or multiple) instead of coins.

If you still need physicial money, Alkmaar has ATM's in the town center and some of the supermarkets provide one as well.
They support Maestro Cards and most other types of cards like EC.
Wired
There will be wired 100BASE-TX/1000BASE-T/10GBASE-T ethernet on the camping grounds and in the caravan area by means of so-called "Data Toilets" or "Datenklos". Look for construction toilets with tin foil wrapped around them.
