Talk Streams WHY 2025
We highly yearn to have the following content streams at WHY2025:
Note: Keep in mind that these streams are outlines. Your talk doesn’t need to fall neatly into exactly one category. It may overlap, it may go out of bounds. The WHY program is not a memorysafe system: so overflow that stack any way you want.
Wonderful creations: Have you created something cool? This is WHY’s show-and-tell. It can be about something you’ve built. A framework you’ve created. An in depth analysis of an interesting subject. The most fabulous explanation of difficult and misunderstood things. Or the art that you made.
Hacking: Did you break something? Did you fix it? Or did you fix it by breaking it, or was it the other way around? Hacking involves using something in a way it was not intended. This can include software, hardware, and humanware all the same
Yearn for a better future: Do you want to improve our society, yourself or influence others to self-improvement? In the Yearning stream we will have talks on ethics, privacy, politics, mental health, society and economics. Improve oneself or help uplift others.
The square hole: If your idea doesn’t fit in any of the categories above, but you think it will be cool to share at WHY, then remember that every shape fits into the square hole.
WHY2025 will also have two talk streams that overlap with some of the thematic streams, you can submit your proposal purely for these streams or you can double and present your talk twice, once in the regular streams or as a foundational or kids level:
Foundation: We want to grow the hacking community and welcome new people who might just be making their first steps into the scene, or are side stepping into new areas that they want to explore. Foundation is the place where we welcome and teach people with little prior knowledge but a lot of motivation.
Kids: Explain It Like I’m Five, but for real. Challenge yourself and present your talk to our youngest hackers in the family village. In a format, time domain and level that is appropriate for primary school children.
Milliways Cyber Circus
The cyber circus is a novel format that you might not be familiar with. Instead of on a stage in front of the audience, you will be presenting in the middle of the room, with the audience in a 360 arrangement around you. Just like in a circus or a theatre-in-the-round. If you feel up to presenting in this format you can opt-in in the CFP form, final selection of speakers for the Cyber Circus is up to Team:Content.
Wary you must be, this format is more challenging than a regular set-up. Holding on to a lectern as a tower of strength, or to hide behind is no more. You will have eyes prying in your back and will need to work the room around you. This is an excellent format to present without a slide-deck, or with physical props. There will be an option to show slides, but you will not be near your laptop, so bring a clicker and assistant.
- Milliways
- Milliways Cyber Circus
The *Milliways Cyber Circus* is supposed to be an additional stage and presentation format (such as workshop or lecture) but not an additional track for WHY2025. In a nutshell it's a circus tent with a stage in the centre and the audience is seated around the speaker covering almost 360°.
The content hosted there is a mix of information security topics and entertainment, as well as a cross-over of those.
- Tent
The *Christal Palace* tent will already be on site since another festival booked it: https://www.spiegeltent.be/mirrortent/cristal-palace
There is space for about 380 people in a seating configuration. The outer places have desks as well and the more central seats don't have any tables. The central seats will be oriented towards the speaker in the middle and the outer seats will still provide a very good view of the speaker. In general, people in the audience will be able to see other attendees on the other side of the tent behind the speaker.
A stage about 0.2-0.5m high and 3-4m wide is placed in the middle of the tent. A cube or triangle with screens for slides can be placed hanging above the speakers in the center. Otherwise, the stage is empty, a lectern or desk should not be placed there.
- Presentation Format
The setup of the tent encourages interaction with the audience and highly interactive presentation formats. The tent is suited for advanced speakers who like to engage with the audience. Presentations can be supported with slides and audio, but speaking completely free is possible as well.
Besides speaking about a particular topic, other formats that engage more with the audience are possible as well.
- Content
The stage is supposed to host information security content. Alternatively the stage can be used for entertainment as well. It's a circus tent and everything that works well in a circus is welcome there, preferably with a cyber security touch.
- Audio and Video
Recording audio and video in the tent is possible, but a little bit more challenging. The speaker will in general look into different directions. Also, there are only a few camera positions that allow recording of the speaker without seeing the audience in the background. Avoiding filming the audience can also be achieved by filming with a wide open aperture.
- Selecting Speakers
Selecting speakers will be challenging. We think that speakers who are experienced and seem to be rather extrovert and engage with the audience would be a good fit. However it is the first time that this presentation format is used at a conference, so we don't know for sure.
In general, we would propose to select speakers based on the quality of the topic they propose and their previous performance on other conferences. Unfortunately that would exclude first time speakers. Having lightening talks could be a good way to have first time speakers at the stage as well.
- Collaboration with the content team
It would be great when the *Cyber Circus* could be part of the core CFP and speakers could indicate whether they want to present in the cyber circus or on a regular stage. Sharing a pretalx instance would make it easy to combine a common schedule and move submissions between the
- cyber circus* and other stages.
- Inviting speakers
Milliways would like to contact potential speakers who could be a good match for the cyber circus and ask them to submit a proposal for the
- cyber circus*. It would be great when we would avoid sending two
requests from two different parts of the content team.
- Reviewing
Milliways already organized a stage at the last CCC camp and would also like to perform reviews for the submissions for the *cyber circus*, jointly with the core content team.
In general, Milliways would like to make sure that all speakers in the circus are sufficiency skilled to perform well on stage, but would also accept a veto in case a speaker is known for not complying with the code of conduct of WHY.
- Double presentations and mingling
Even while the *cyber circus* is a dedicated presentation format, it still shares a lot with regular lectures on stage. It might be possible that there are many submissions that could fit both and very likely the largest regular stage at WHY2025 has more seats than the *cyber circus*. We need a way to handle those cases. Potential solutions could be:
- Giving a lecture about the topic first, and then have a second lecture
in the cyber circus.
- Giving a lecture about the topic first and then having a Q&A in the
cyber circus.
- Just a lecture in the circus or just a lecture on the large stage.
